Optimistic Tragedy (Russian: Оптимистическая трагедия) is a play written by Vsevolod Vishnevskiy in the Soviet Union in 1933 with a dedication to the 15th anniversary of the Red Army. The play is set in St. Petersburg, and Kronstadt, Russia, after the Russian Revolution and during the Russian Civil War. Some scenes are set on a ship of the Red Navy on the Baltic Sea near Saint Petersburg. The play has three acts.(Wikipedia) Vladimir Lebedev was a celebrated member of the Russian avant-garde. He was a talented painter, brilliant draughtsman, the creator of the 'ROSTA windows' propaganda posters during the revolution. (Sotherbys). This poster was created using one of Lebedev's famous Rosta images for a performance by the Berlin Ensemble. The Berliner Ensemble is a German theatre company established by actress Helene Weigel and her husband, playwright Bertolt Brecht, in January 1949 in East Berlin. (Wikipedia)
