French theater poster for the opera-ballet 'The Golden Cockerel' by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. 1928 - Artist, Georges de Pogedaieff (1897 - 1971), was an important Russian visual artist who created art for Russian ballets including the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo. Very nice lithography - " ... it was Russian fairy tales that exerted the most lasting pull on Rimsky-Korsakov and inspired most of his operas. In their nostalgia for a premodern society, they reveal his ambivalence — perhaps tinged, yes, with shame — toward czarist might and the progress of Russian history.
