Orpheus in the Underworld David Pountney, the Artistic Director of the ENO, saw a drawing I had made of the ENO production of Wagner's The Valkyrie at the Coliseum in the Sunday Times, and subsequently commissioned me to design Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld in 1984. David wanted the production set in a Victorian lunatic asylum. I felt constricted by the idea, and wanted to create my own world. There seems to be a convention of transporting operas to another time.
