Ernest “Ernie” Eugene Barnes, Jr. (July 15, 1938 – April 27, 2009) was an African-American painter, well-known for his unique style of elongation and movement. His famous "Sugar Shack" painting was featured on Marvin Gaye's 1976 “I Want You” album and he was the official artist of the 1984 Olympics. Barnes was born in 1938 and grew up in segregated Durham, North Carolina during the Jim Crow era.
