1975 NYC production. From a Broadway 3-sheet. The 1975 Broadway production of The Wiz was a groundbreaking, all-Black musical adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, blending rock, gospel, and soul. Opening on January 5, 1975 at the Majestic Theatre (with a first preview on Dec 24, 1974) it won seven Tony Awards—including Best Musical and Best Score (Charlie Smalls)—and ran for 1,666 performances. The Wiz iz a wow — that’s what you read on every bus and Broadway poster back in the mid-1970s (the ubiquitous pitch line came from Marilyn Stasio’s review in the long-gone Cue magazine).
