"John Joseph O'Connor (January 15, 1920 – May 3, 2000) was an American prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of New York from 1984 until his death in 2000, and was created a cardinal in 1985." "The protest yesterday (December 10, 1989) was not the first time the Cardinal had drawn the wrath of gay rights groups. In 1987 and 1988, a group of homosexual Roman Catholics, called Dignity, held regular protests at the Cathedral after Cardinal O'Connor ordered an end to a special Mass they had been celebrating at another Manhattan church. Protesters said yesterday's action was prompted by what they said was Cardinal O'Connor's growing verbal assault on abortion and on the use of ''safe sex'' with condoms as a precaution against AIDS."
