Undated print with an image from 1977/78 #191 GRAPHIS MAGAZINE cover (a magazine dedicated to graphic design, advertising, and illustration). Painted by Richard Hess who also included it in the 1984 Book "TEN" (1984 PB Neenah Paper) about failed assignments and explains it was the second painting done in his two attempts at creating an album cover for a Billie Holiday re-release album. His submission was ultimately rejected by Columbia Records. In the book he explains: "Directly, without sketching I began to paint the picture I heard in the music... It didn't look like Billie Holiday. It looked like the performance rather than the performer. I had violated my contract and I knew it. I had been hired as an archivist and I had failed to fulfill that function. But I felt I'd kept the faith. Early the next morning I began to finish the first version even before the AD called to tell me of the rejection I knew would come. It didn't matter. I've had two dozen offers to sell the black Lady but I still own it."
