"Presley Neville O'Bannon was a first lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. During the Battle of Derna at Derna, Cyrenaica, in 1805, O'Bannon was part of an American-led army that included Marines, which attempted to restore Prince Hamet Karamanli to his throne as the Bey of Tripoli. During the campaign, his success is immortalized in the “Marines Hymn” with the line, “…from the shores of Tripoli.”" (source: USMC Museum)
