The 1977-1979 Stearns, Kentucky coal strike was a long, violent dispute where miners represented by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) walked out against Stearns Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Blue Diamond Coal) to demand union recognition and improved safety standards, specifically regarding methane monitoring and refusal rights for unsafe work. (NYTimes) "The San Francisco Poster Brigade, originally called the Wilfred Owen Brigade, was co-founded by artist Rachael Romero in the San Francisco Bay area in 1975. In 1980 they began the Internationalist Art Show: Anti WW3, a mail-art phenomenon in San Francisco.
